How to Repair a DEEP SCRATCH in Car Paint (DIY)

Learn how to repair a deep scratch in the paint of your car. In this case someone keyed my car so I will show you how to remove a deep scratch from that using a touch up paint pen. Fixing scratches in your car's paint is simple and if they are just clear coat scratches it is even easier.

To remove deep scratches you need to clean the scratch, sand the scratch, use touchup paint on the scratch, sand that paint smooth with the factory paint job, add clear coat, and wet sand that smooth with the factory paint. Then you can polish the whole panel and you are done!

This tutorial really helped me. My wife's beautiful Dodge Challenger had a large (1/2) chip in the clear coat. Don't know how it happened, I have never seen it before, but was able to repair it. Not perfect, but the new paint is protected and it looks pretty good.

Chris, Dude, What have you done?!? I’m the guy who can barely check his oil properly. Had someone scrape down my front quarter panel, tearing up the paint the whole way. Just spent the day following your instructions, and I’m blown away that I actually could do this! It turned out amazing. I have an old Land Cruiser, and it probably needs every single one of your videos done to it, but you’ve lit a fire in me that I can actually do some of the needed maintenance. (While the clear coat was drying, I was blowing a shop vac up my exhaust and spraying “soapy wooder”on it to find leaks!). Many thanks Brother, and keep up the great work.

I hate to dispute your video's credibility, but if you pause and review your estimate, it covers a heck of a lot more than just repairing the scratch on the fender. Just repairing the scratch on the fender is a fraction of the $774.74 you are claiming it takes to repair just the scratch.

This is way harder than it looks. Please be careful and test first. My car had a satin silver finish with 20 years of fade. The exact base coat that I got looked much brighter. Using the touch-up brush gets swirling designs in any spread above 5mm. I probably should use an aerosol. The staff at the automotive paint shop I went to were confused that I'd ever want sandpaper above 600 grit. They never stocked above 2000 grit, let alone 3000 and 5000. I have no idea how that higher grit sandpaper can buff out swirl marks. There seems to be different types of polish out there with vastly different results. Somehow the one I chose ruined the reflectiveness of the clear coat.

I’ve seen many attempts on LTdron and a lot in person. 99.999% of them look terrible. You did an amazing job and used proper techniques and explained the process well. I’m quite familiar with the automotive refinishing process and I have to say that the work you put in really does look great. Obviously not showroom quality, but damn near close. Oh and that 3k to 5k grit jump was perfect for that hand buffing. Good stuff!
